4EFOA and ECETOC contribute to ?The Congress on Petroleum Contaminated Soils, Sediments and Water? in London (Aug. 14-17, 2001)
At the occasion of this Congress, EFOA (European Fuel Oxygenates Association) and ECETOC (European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals) presented the results of the MTBE shadow risk assessment report they have jointly carried out.

Both organisations completed this scientifically objective shadow risk assessment report in parallel with the environmental risk assessment carried out by the European Competent Authorities under the EU Existing Substance Regulations.
This report has gathered data on production, use, emissions, fate, behaviour and effects of MTBE in the EU and used this data to assess the risk to the environment.
Work on the shadow risk assessment has allowed EFOA to co-operate with the EU Competent Authorities on the regulatory risk assessment of MTBE by providing data and discussing technical aspects of the environmental risk assessment.

The overall conclusion of the shadow risk assessment is that the environmental risk of using MTBE as a fuel additive, process intermediate or a solvent is low. For environmental compartments exposed to MTBE via wastewater discharges from production and processing. There is a need for further information and/or testing.
