SABIC Europe annuonced today the start of production of bio-ETBE (ethyl-tertiary-butyl-ether) at its Geleen plan in the Netherlands.

4 EU Accepts Draft Risk Assessment for ETBE
Due to the growing potential for wide dispersive use of ETBE (ethyl tertiary butyl ether) as a biofuel and as a substitute for MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) in 2002 the Commission issued Regulation 1217/2002 calling for a range of toxicity data to be generated.

4 EFOA supports biofuels but opposes mandate
EFOA recently issued their common position paper on the development of biofuels in Europe, taking into account EU Directives 2003/30/EC and 2003/96/EC.  Whilst EFOA supports biofuels, they are opposed to establishing their mandatory usage.  EFOA has been recognized as a stakeholder by the European Commission and is a member of the European Commission Consultative Group on Biofuels for Transport.

4 MTBE - an alternative fuel to help Europe meet its energy challenge
MTBE should be considered an alternative fuel by itself. It derives from natural gas (methanol and field butane), which has been recognised by the EU Commission as one of the key alternative sources of energy to be developed in the future. It is available today, at no extra development cost, to fuel traditional vehicles.

4 EFOA position on the proposed European Biofuels Directives
EFOA follows with interest the development of the European biofuels directives and the discussion on alternative fuels. It is a member of the European Commission Consultative Group on Biofuels for Transport.
EFOA is concerned that the draft directives could create market distortions and inefficiencies and is opposed to establishing mandatory volumes of biofuels.

4 European Fuel News report mentions EFOA
The December 12 issue of the fortnight European Fuel News publication has a lead story on the EU Risk Assessment for MTBE which was official on December 4, 2001. Also EFN publishes an interview on the subject with Bruno H, Director General of EFOA and Hilka Vahervuori, Product Safety Manager at Finland's Fortum Oil & Gas and lead member of the EFOA risk assessment task force.

At the occasion of this Congress, EFOA (European Fuel Oxygenates Association) and ECETOC (European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals) presented the results of the MTBE shadow risk assessment report they have jointly carried out.
