| 4 EU Experts conclude TAME is a hazard-limited material |
|
The classification of TAME (tertiary-amy-methyl-ether) was discussed recently at the European Chemical Bureau Classification & Labelling Meeting. Based on data collected in the risk assessment report, it was concluded that no classification was required in terms of carcinogenicity and that the agreed TAME classification should be: R11 - highly flammable R22 - harmful if swallowed R67 - vapours may cause drowsiness and dizziness The new classification is expected to come into force in 2006. |

| A New York judge recently ruled that refiners can?t be held liable when MTBE contaminates groundwater as a result of gasoline leaks at retail outlets, because doing so would preempt the federal Clean Air Act (CAA). |

The replacement of MTBE by another substance is not necessary in Switzerland. A BUWAL (Swiss Federal Office for Environment, Forest and Landscape) study points out that the groundwater contamination is clearly today and also in the coming years under the legally permitted limit value. The MTBE emissions decreased in the past ten years already by 40% and might sink in the coming years. |

| BP-ARCO will spend $45.8 million to settle charges that it installed inadequate underground storage tanks in at least 59 Arco gas stations in California. The leaky tanks may have allowed gasoline and the additive MTBE to leak into soil and groundwater, prosecutors charged. |

| On Friday 15th March, California Governor Gray Davis postponed by one year the deadline to ban MTBE as a fuel additive across California. Through an executive order, he extended the MTBE Ban from January 1, 2003 until January 1, 2004. |

| Canadian methanol producer Methanex has recently stroke a joint venture deal with BP to build a US$ 400 million plant in Trinidad and Tobago. Methanex will hold 63% interest of the project and BP 37%. Total capacity will reach 5.000 tons/day when site is launched in 2004. |
