EFOA Mission

EFOA
is the association that represents European producers of fuel ethers - principally methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE), ethyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (ETBE) and tertiary-amyl-methyl-ether (TAME).

EFOA:
  • Is dedicated to the responsible usage and the promotion of chemical fuel ethers as components of gasoline.

  • Supports and disseminates state-of-the art scientific research on the benefits and impact of ethers on health and the environment.
  • Believes in the application of sound scientific principles and actively promotes constructive co-operation with all stakeholders: regulators, legislators, industry, NGOs etc.

The better known fuel oxygenates today are MTBE and bio-ETBE.

MTBE is still a widely used ether-based component. With the aim of helping both specialists and non-specialists alike to find their way through the mass of information on the subject, EFOA has produced in particular the MTBE Resource Guide, which brings together the latest factual and practical information on MTBE, including its use and handling, and the prevention and remediation of leaks and spills. The MTBE Resource Guide can be accessed and downloaded from this site.

ETBE is a biofuel derived from ethanol (47 % v/v) and from isobutylene (53% v/v).  It was first used in France in 1992 and is today widely used and manufactured in most major gasoline markets in Europe.  An ETBE Product Bulletin was put together in 2006 and provides a useful summary of the information available today on ETBE.  The ETBE Product Bulletin can be accessed and downloaded from this site as well.
